What this chapter covers
Visiting China can accelerate supplier selection because you see the factory reality: line discipline, packaging quality, and how they handle problems. It can also be overwhelming if you arrive without a plan. This chapter outlines how to prepare, what to evaluate on-site, and how to convert your visit into a clean production + shipping plan.
Before you go: plan your trip like a project
- Define goals: supplier selection, quality validation, negotiation, or tooling discussions.
- Book appointments: factories are busy; walk-ins waste time.
- Bring references: samples, drawings, packaging specs, and a checklist.
- Group by region: minimize travel time by focusing on one or two clusters.
- Buffer days: allow time for follow-ups and unexpected issues.
Trade shows, markets, and industrial clusters
Different sourcing routes fit different buyers:
- Trade shows: many suppliers in one place; great for discovery and comparison.
- Wholesale markets: good for variety and smaller quantities; verify producer identity.
- Industrial clusters: best when you want original producers and category expertise.
Factory walk: what to look at (not just the showroom)
The showroom is marketing. The production floor is truth. Walk the steps that matter for your product.
- Incoming material storage and labeling
- In-process QC checkpoints and test equipment
- Work instructions and defect handling
- Packaging line: carton strength, sealing, markings, pallet patterns
- Capacity: how many lines and how they schedule orders
Questions to ask on-site
- What are the most common defects and how are they prevented?
- How do they handle change requests after sample approval?
- Who are their sub-suppliers and what is inspected inbound?
- What lead time is realistic in peak season?
After the visit: lock decisions in writing
Immediately after meetings, update your spec pack with photos, agreed materials, packaging, and timelines. Confirm Incoterms and the named handover point. Then align your shipping plan to the factory’s ship-ready date.
How KLG International helps
Once you confirm the supplier address and cargo readiness window, KLG can plan pickups, advise on port/airport routing, and coordinate scheduling so the shipment doesn’t miss cutoffs. The goal is to convert your factory visit into an execution timeline.
